Template notice: This document is provided as a starting template for AI News Update. For production use, especially if you accept payments, target EU/UK/California audiences, or run third-party advertising, please have it reviewed by qualified legal counsel.
1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device when you visit. They help the site remember your preferences and how you interact with it. "Cookies" in this policy also refers to similar technologies like local storage, session storage, and pixel tags.
2. Cookies we use
We try to keep cookie use minimal. Here's the full list:
2.1 Strictly necessary (always on)
- ainu_cookie_consent_v1 — remembers whether you accepted or rejected cookies on the banner so we don't show it on every page. Stored in your browser's local storage. Expires when you clear browser data.
2.2 Preference cookies (always on, no personal data)
- Future-use slot for remembering things like dark/light mode if we ever add that feature. Currently not active.
2.3 Analytics cookies (currently NOT used)
At the time this policy was written, AI News Update does not deploy any analytics tracking (no Google Analytics, no Plausible, no Fathom, etc.). If we add analytics in the future, we will update this policy and require your consent for any tracking that is not strictly anonymous.
2.4 Advertising cookies (only with consent)
If we serve advertising on the Site through partners (e.g., a display ad network), those partners may set cookies to measure ad performance and frequency, and to personalize ads to your interests. These cookies are only set if you click "Accept all" on the cookie banner. If you click "Reject non-essential," advertising cookies will not be loaded.
3. Third-party cookies
Some pages embed third-party content that may set their own cookies, including:
- Google Fonts — for serving the typefaces used on the Site (Fraunces, DM Sans, JetBrains Mono). Google Fonts does not, by default, set cookies, but does receive your IP and user-agent.
- Unsplash — for serving hero images. May log a request for the image but does not set cookies on our site.
- WhatsApp / Meta — only if you click a WhatsApp link to message us.
4. Your choices
- Cookie banner — when you first visit, click "Accept all" or "Reject non-essential." Your choice is remembered.
- Change your mind — clear your browser's site data for backcomputer.com to see the banner again, then choose differently.
- Browser settings — most browsers let you block all cookies, block third-party cookies, or be notified when a cookie is set. See your browser's documentation for details.
- Do Not Track — we honor browser DNT signals where technically practical.
5. Impact of rejecting cookies
The Site is designed to work fully even if you reject all non-essential cookies. The only thing the strictly-necessary cookie does is remember your banner choice — without it, you'd see the banner on every visit.
6. Updates to this policy
If we add new cookies (for example, when we introduce analytics or advertising), we will update this page and re-prompt you with the cookie banner so you can make a fresh choice.
